The Art of Journalism with the Press Club of New Orleans and the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center 

On Oct. 12, the Press Club of New Orleans is co-hosting a panel with the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans and Prospect New Orleans at the CAC. Spencer is moderating the panel, which begins at 7:30 p.m. and will center on the influence of Journalism in the world of art. The panelists include artists, journalists and art-world heavy hitters. Enjoy complimentary wine and light bites, as well as a 6:30 p.m. happy hour prior to the discussion.

Focus Women’s Conference, Mobile, Alabama

On Sept. 22, Spencer is presenting a workshop at the Focus Women’s Conference in Mobile, Alabama. The “Creating Your Personal Brand” workshop will empower attendees to get started on and refine a strategy for presenting themselves online and professionally in a way that is authentic and sets them up for success. University of Louisiana, Lafayette, Louisiana

On February 9, 2017, Spencer will speak to the features writing class at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. The talk will focus on navigating a career in journalism, how to pitch to and work with editors and what types of stories editors are looking for from freelance contributors.

Press Club of New Orleans and Press Relations Association of Louisiana Lunch and Learn Panel, New Orleans, Louisiana

On August 9, 2016, Spencer is one of four journalists speaking to the Press Relations Association of Louisiana, New Orleans chapter during a lunch and learn hosted by the Press Club of New Orleans and PRAL. The panel discussion will include tips and advice on how to get your stories in the hands of the right reporter or editor, cultivating relationships with reporters and editors, as well as ethical considerations when working with different arms of the news and lifestyle media across all platforms.

Spring Hill College, Mobile Alabama

On Jan. 28, 2016, Spencer will speak to the Principles of Strategic Communication class at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. The talk focuses on how to work with journalists as a PR professional; the importance of strong writing skills; how to repurpose content; the importance of internships; and expectations for recent graduates as new employees.

On Jan. 28, 2016, Spencer will present her popular workshop, “Translating Writing for Print, the Web and Other Media” to the PRCA of Mobile for its January luncheon speaker series. Evolution, education and innovation are crucial to survival in the ever-changing media landscape. What works on Twitter doesn’t necessarily work on Facebook, Instagram or Periscope, and a piece for print needs tweaking to work online. For this talk, Spencer will discuss crafting content that’s entertaining and informative for the desired platform.

WV commencementOn May 23, 2013, Spencer delivered the keynote address at her alma mater, Walton Verona High School, in Walton, Kentucky.

This humbling opportunity allowed Spencer to visit with and thank the teachers and administrators who contributed to her successful college experience and helped prepare her for a robust writing and art career.

Addressing the graduates and being able to tell them first hand that no matter where they come from, they can achieve goals and realize dreams they never thought possible, because of the wonderful start they got at WVHS.

On Oct. 18, in Austin, Texas Spencer was at the Texas Book Festival at the Texas State Capitol, moderating the author session for “True Prep,” written by Lisa Birnbach (of the iconic “The Official Preppy Handbook”) and designer Chip Kidd.

The tome is a sequel to the book that launched a million pairs of Sperry Top-Sider’s and lets readers in on what Muffy has been up to all these years.
